Chapter 10

Levi stood at the pantry’s threshold until Kate acknowledged him with a glance. Then she stilled, a hand on the flour bin. He pressed close, splaying a hand over her lower back and dipping his mouth to her ear. “You still owe me a croissant-making lesson.”

She turned, the bin out in front of her like a shield. “That’s not a good idea anymore.”

“A promise is a promise. Name the time.”

“There’s no good time. The kitchen’s always crowded with people.”

“Nice try. I’ve been in here at midnight and it’s empty. And it’s empty now.” He brushed her lower lip with his thumb. Change of plans. Forget waiting until the croissant lesson—he was going to kiss her right here.

He took the flour from her and set it on a shelf. Despite her obvious nerves and the hesitancy she’d voiced, she didn’t tell him to stop. She didn’t duck away. Emboldened, he cupped her cheeks with his hands, looked into her anxious eyes, then captured her lips with his.

She went stiff until he stroked her lip with his tongue. Then she melted into him, surrendering her body to his will. She made a whimpering sound into his mouth that vibrated against his tongue, but it was the feel of her hands lifting his shirt to feel his stomach that fueled his driving need to claim her body. To never let her go and the world be damned.

He pressed her against the pantry shelves, pinning her with his hips, taking more. As much as she would give him for as long as she would give it. Forever.

He wrenched his mouth away, his final thought echoing ominously in his head. Forever? He didn’t know that word was in his relationship vocabulary. He fought to hide the panic from his expression but feared he failed miserably.

He tried to back away, but she took his head in her hands and locked him to her. “Look at me,” she said, her voice low and thick.

He pulled his gaze from the doorway he’d been staring blankly through to look her full in the face, at her dilated eyes and mouth that was moist and slightly swollen. The most erotic vision he’d ever seen.

“Did that feel like control to you?” she asked.

Hell, no. One minute he was going along with the plan he’d laid out and the next he’d lost complete command of his senses. How had he allowed that to happen again? He touched his lower lip with his tongue, absentmindedly wondering if his lips were as marked with passion as hers were.

She pushed him away and grabbed the bin of flour again. “No more kissing. Neither one of us could handle what came next. You know I’m right.”

She made to slink around him and leave the pantry, but he lassoed her waist with his hand and backed her up against him, breathing into the hair at her temple. He needed to counter her argument with logic about control and plans and scratching itches.

Too bad his blood was flooded with hot, thick testosterone and all he could think was more.
